Setup Wizard for Update Rollup X for Exchange server 2010 (KBxxxxxx) ended prematurely

When installing Update Rollup's for Exchange 2010, on a server 2008 with AUC enabled, I get this error:
Setup Wizard for Update Rollup X for Exchange server 2010 (KBxxxxxx) ended prematurely

Of course disabling AUC is not the best option, and I discovered that this works:
Open CMD as administrator (right click, choose run as administrator) and start the "Exchange2010-KBxxxxx-x64-en.msp" from the command prompt.

  1. Hello, I'm getting the same error message when installing rollup update 4 on exchange 2010 sp1. how would i run .msp from a command prompt?

  2. Hi,
Start the CMD as administrator, go to the directory where the RU is. Just type the filename, and press enter.
It should be as simple as that :-)
Let me know if it works for you.

  4. Hi Devendra,

What error are you getting, and can you explain, what you do?
Are you sure the CMD-prompt is elevated? (Can you do a "ipconfig /flushdns" without errors?)

  5. Thanks Lasse. Your tip worked for me installing update rollup 5 for exchange 2010 sp3. When I ran it from double clicking, I knew something was wrong because it took no time at all to generate the native images for .NET assemblies. After running from an elevated command prompt, the update took much longer to generate those, and the installation went through just fine.
